Facts for the Discerning Traveler

inn | in |

noun

an establishment providing accommodations, food, and drink, especially for travelers.

[usually in names] a restaurant or bar, typically one in the country, in some cases providing accommodations: Stockton Inn.

To immerse in Stockton Inn, one needs to luxuriate in its sumptuous guest rooms, play a round of chess in the private lounge dressed in hand-painted wallpaper, stroll the gaslit lantern street, and take a culinary journey over dinner. With three centuries of history architected into every stone and beam, we are a countryside setting full of stories, soft whispers, and solitude. Until you arrive, here is a guide to Stockton Inn: the frequently asked questions answered for your convenience. Should another arise, it is always our pleasure to hear from you.

A culinary retreat in the countryside

Yes. Before reopening in 2024, the inn underwent a full renovation to restore the main building and two on-site carriage houses into a boutique hotel and restaurant. Helming operations is James Beard Award-winning managing director Anthony Rudolf (Thomas Keller’s Per Se and Jean-Georges), who brings his passion for hospitality, people, and team leadership to every facet of guest experiences. This iteration of Stockton Inn vivifies its legacy as a place for locals and travelers to unwind with bespoke amenities and incredible fare.

The restaurant, which possesses the namesake of the storied inn itself, is refined yet relaxed. Designed with three distinct dining areas, it has a firelit tavern to tuck into for an intimate experience, a marble dining room encased in glass with a roaring wood-fire hearth, and the year-round stone terrace, set beside our waterfall and historic wishing well.

Our ever-changing, seasonal menu can be described as modern American. Each dish is driven by the culinary prowess of Executive Chef Bob Truitt, a James Beard Award semifinalist who draws upon his experience at Michelin-starred restaurants like Michael White’s Marea, the iconic Spanish landmark El Bulli, and Corton, and his team. Chef Truitt works with local purveyors and farms to source ingredients when possible, and ensures each dish reflects the landscape surrounding our inn.

Yes, two. The tavern’s 12-seat bar is surrounded with comfortable leather lounge seating, a flickering fire and deep green, velvety interiors. Outside, the year-round enclosed terrace has an 8-seat bar with high tops and comfortable lounge seating, some around the firepit. With a TV to watch your favorite sport, gorgeous waterfall views and an original stone boulder wall, this is the perfect place to unwind al fresco through every month.

Our head bartender, Brian Miller, architects the extensive beverage program at our two bars and throughout the restaurant. Miller, whose experience spans Death & Co, Pegu Club, and The Polynesian from Major Food Group, celebrates the history of spirits with iconic cocktails – always noting the date they were first crafted and who by. When it comes to his own creations, he doesn’t take himself too seriously. Alongside our sommelier’s wine cellar and craft beer selection from local New Jersey breweries, Miller gives guests an experience that is as elevated as it is eccentric.

While the bar is first-come, first-served, reservations are highly encouraged for dinner. Plus, a little notice gives you the option of selecting whether you’d like to be in the Tavern, elegant Dining Room or outside on the year-round terrace.

Stockton Inn is currently open for dinner from 4:30 p.m. on, with the kitchen open at 5 p.m. Our sister property, Stockton Market, offers a wonderful selection of fresh-baked pastries, breads, confections and gourmet specialties available all day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Our inn was built in walking distance to the Delaware River, which stretches from the western part of the Catskills to Delaware Bay towards the Atlantic Ocean. As a countryside retreat located midway between New York and Philadelphia, step outside our front door to gorgeous walking, biking, and hiking trails immersed in nature near our picturesque downtown Stockton.

We coordinate in-room massages booked in advance and can recommend full-service spas in the area for guests who prefer an off-site experience. While there’s no pool on site, there’s no reason to keep your swimwear home. In the warmer months, the Delaware River, just steps away, becomes a prime destination for boating, kayaking, and tubing.

To maintain the historic integrity of the inn, we do not have an on-site gym. We do, however, offer $20 day passes to Cornerstone, a full-scale fitness facility in New Hope, PA, three miles down the road. We can also recommend a range of yoga, barre, pilates, and boxing studios within 10 minutes of the inn.

We have complementary bicycles for our guest’s enjoyment. Whatever the season, the D&R Canal Towpath, just across the way from the inn, is one of the area’s biggest attractions for enjoying the Delaware River Valley Scenic Bypass by foot and pedal. In just 10 to 15 minutes by bike, you’ll be in the heart of vibrant weekender towns of New Hope, PA and Lambertville, NJ, both famed for their galleries, vintage shopping, antiques and auction houses, restaurants, book and record stores and more.

Sip fresh-roasted complimentary coffee each morning in our private guest lounge, connected to the inn rooms through a speakeasy stairwell. Our sister property, the Stockton Market, serves breakfast and house-baked pastries Wednesday through Sunday. Breakfast credit can be applied to certain booking packages.

Enjoy the full menu from Chef Bob Truitt during dinner hours in the comfort of your room. In-room dining for breakfast or lunch can be coordinated in advance through our front desk.

We understand that pets are like family. We’ve reserved a few rooms to accommodate pets under 40 pounds with a $75/night fee. There are plenty of places to take them for walks and establishments around Stockton, Lambertville, and Frenchtown that are dog-friendly.

There is always something special happening at the inn, whether a midweek getaway package, romantic escape, family gathering, or tasting dinner. Visit our Exclusive Offers page to learn more.

With Stockton Inn located midway between Philadelphia (a 50-minute drive) and New York City (an hour and 20 minute drive), there are plenty of ways to get here, if not by car. In the 1800s, there was a railroad and ferry travel that stopped just outside the inn, but luckily the tracks have dissolved into the beautiful natural terrain, which secures Stockton as a countryside escape seemingly untouched by time.

There are several train stations within 30 minutes (Hamilton, Princeton Junction and Trenton, NJ or Doylestown, PA) with lines from international airports (EWR and PHL) and non-stop trips from central stations. We suggest pre-booking an Uber for station transport or Open Door Valet for those who prefer a private car.

We always want to accommodate our guests to curate the most memorable getaway. We offer a Welcome Charcuterie Board for Two, In-Room Champagne and Dessert, In-Room Massage Therapy, and a Picnic Lunch for Two.

As a 300-year-old landmark in the Delaware River Valley, we love hosting intimate gatherings, full-scale celebrations, and everything in between. Our dedicated team and events coordinator will plan and execute your private party, wedding, conference, dinner, luncheon, cocktail hour, or inn buyout. Visit our events page to learn more.

Gift cards for overnight stays or languid dinners can be purchased both in-person and online.
