Getting Here & Going About Town
Where is Stockton?
The charming, small town of Stockton is just 1 hour and 20 minutes from Manhattan and 1 hour from Philadelphia. Stockton is the better kept secret in a vibrant string of eclectic towns built along the Pennsylvania and New Jersey banks of the Delaware River, each about a 10-minute drive or leisurely bike ride from our inn.
Originally early American settlements, Stockton, Frenchtown, Lambertville and New Hope evolved, from Prohibition to PRIDE, into bustling hubs for artists, epicures, antiquers, farmers, nature lovers, and city transplants who opt for a bucolic life steeped in beauty and history. The area is known collectively as the Delaware River Valley.
Explore the river towns
The inn has partnered with many community organizations to curate guest experiences, from historic biplane rides and Jeep tours to spa and wellness experiences. The Delaware River Valley is rich with activities, shopping, art, antiques, and nature. Each town is connected by bike paths, hiking trails, and walkable bridges – so it’s easy to explore, whether you have a car or not.
Stockton (Stockton Inn is located in the center of it; all accessible within a 5-minute walk)
Picturesque small town facing the Delaware River and easy to explore by sidewalks and a towpath. Stockton Inn & Market are the heart of the town, but you’ll also find…
- Stockton Market: Our sister property, a community hub for artisanal all-day baked goods, breakfast, and lunch, prepared foods, and curated home goods for a delightful shopping experience.
- Prallsville Mill: A beautifully restored mill built on the canal with pop-up art galleries, craft shows, historic events, and more.
Sullivan Street Tea & Spice Company: A well-stocked spice shop formerly in the West Village. - Oddbird Brewing: An indoor-outdoor brewery in a gas station open Thurs. to Sun.
- Immortal Milk: Pocket-sized gourmet cheese shop in the same gas station.
- Starving Artist Café: Super casual local joint with live music, even at breakfast, and barbecue from a local punk musician.
- Dilly’s: An iconic roadside stand for ice cream and burgers (veggie burgers, too) just a short walk across the bridge.
Frenchtown (15-minute drive; 1-hour bike ride along river)
One smaller Main Street to walk with lots to explore, including large multi-story gallery space and performance art center Art Yard, Finn Bar (the low-key concept from Cal Peternell, executive chef of Bay Area Chez Panisse for 20 years), a funky record shop, potter and candlemaker, wool shop, and consignment store with fun finds.
Lambertville (8-min drive, 15 min bike ride)
A larger town connected by a walkable bridge to New Hope – easily a full day of shopping, walking, and exploring. It’s like if a Norman Rockwell painting and Brooklyn had a baby.
- Bookshops: Panoply (vintage + rare finds) on North Union and Howling Basset Books on Coryell.
- Church Street: Home to several amazing vintage shops (one from Ralph Lauren’s former stylist), a record shop, a vegan juice bar, and a dispensary in an old firehouse.
- The People’s Store: A 3-story art and antique emporium on the corner of Church & North Union
- Lambert + Hope: Homewares (by a former Anthropologie stylist) in the town’s former hardware store, Finkles.
- The Boat House: Iconic Lambertville haunt in the alley across from Lambert + Hope, filled with nautical wares and a narrow stairwell.
- Speckled Egg: 10-table New Orleans-style cottage with a rotating menu great for lunch Monday, Tuesday, some Thursdays, and Sunday.
New Hope (9-minute drive, 15-minute bike ride)
The most touristy town in the Delaware River Valley famed for its PRIDE Parade, a hybrid of biker bars, hippie tea shops, restaurants, and shops.
- Nurture Spa: Full-service spa and Stockton Inn partner perfect for a spa day in a historic warehouse.
- Bucks County Playhouse: A well-established theater overlooking the Delaware River.
- East Ferry Street: A picturesque street off of Bridge St. to wander around
- The Meanings of Things: Lovely homewares
